Football Names Billy Cosh Offensive Coordinator

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond head football coach Russ Huesman announced the hiring of Billy Cosh as the program's new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Cosh joins the Spiders after a successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the high-scoring VMI Keydets.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to coach at a prominent program such as the University of Richmond," Cosh said. "I am excited to work alongside Coach Huesman, his staff and Spider student-athletes. I am hungry to get to work."
Cosh has guided the VMI offense for the past two seasons, including the 2021 spring season that saw the Keydets post a 6-2 record, a Southern Conference Championship and a berth in the FCS Playoffs. Cosh's offense, dubbed the Air Raid offense, finished in the top 20 in the country in numerous categories and top two in the SoCon in seven offensive marks. The Keydets ranked 20th in the nation in scoring offense (29.2), 18th in passing efficiency (144.77), 17th in total offense (427.6 yards), ninth in passing offense (309.4 yards) and fifth in total first downs (201).
Cosh also served as quarterbacks coach and guided two Keydet quarterbacks to honors in the spring season. Starting quarterback Reece Udinski earned Second Team All-Conference honors for his play prior to suffering a mid-season injury. Redshirt freshman quarterback Seth Morgan stepped in and didn't miss a beat in the offense, earning SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades. Morgan finished second in the nation with a 71.3 completion percentage and ninth with a 153.5 passing efficiency helping the Keydets finish the year ranked No. 12 in the final polls.
During the fall season, Cosh and the Keydets finished with a 6-5 overall record, marking the program's second-straight winning season. VMI continued to light up the scoreboard this fall, ranking 32nd in the country in scoring (31.3 points), 26th in total offense (417.9), 25th in passing offense (256.9) and 15th in the country in first downs (253). The Keydets placed two wide receivers on the All-SoCon team this fall as Michael Jackson and Jakob Herres combined to haul in 98 receptions for 1,195 yards and 11 total touchdowns.
Prior to being named offensive coordinator, Cosh spent two seasons as the wide receivers coach in the Air Raid offense. He was instrumental in the development of the wide receiver corps, coaching back-to-back 1,000-yard wide receivers in Herres in 2019 (1,091 yards on 72 receptions) and Kris Thornton in 2018 (1,003 yards on 87 receptions). In his two seasons as wide receivers coach, he mentored four All-SoCon selections in the high-powered offensive attack.
Cosh came to VMI from Indiana, where he served as an offensive graduate assistant and handled various duties, including assisting with the passing game plan, running the scout team defense and special teams. Additionally, he worked with Hoosier quarterbacks and wide receivers, while evaluating the quarterback position in recruiting.
Cosh began his coaching career at Concord University in 2015, serving as an offensive graduate assistant and quarterbacks coach. He was involved with the quarterback position development and recruited the state of Maryland.
Cosh played collegiately at Houston (2013-14), Butler Community College (2012), James Madison (2011) and Kansas State (2010). He led Butler CC to the NJCCA National Championship, throwing for 2,856 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2012. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sociology from the University of Houston in 2015.
In high school, Cosh broke the Maryland state records for single-season passing yardage (3,913), passing touchdowns (56), and completions (292) at Arundel High School. He is also the Maryland high school career record holder with 112 passing touchdowns.
Cosh is married to the former Kelsey Zamora. He is the son of long-time collegiate coach Chris Cosh who has been a defensive coordinator for eight FBS schools and also served as the Spiders' defensive coordinator in 2016.
