RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swimming begins the long-awaited 2021 season tomorrow afternoon at the George Mason Aquatic and Fitness Center. Along with the Spiders, George Mason will be hosting William & Mary and George Washington at 1 p.m. for the first meet of the season.
The Spiders finished the 2020 season at the Atlantic 10 Championships, earning a fourth-place team finish. Racing this weekend is last year's A-10 champion in the 200 breaststroke, Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.). Purcell earned Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week three times during the 2019-20 season, following up a rookie season that led her to win the A-10 Rookie of the Week award three separate times.
Also competing at this weekend's meet is junior Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J). Palfreyman earned points at the A-10 Championship meet a year ago in the 200 freestyle while also competing in the 500 and 100 freestyles. Jenna Carastro (Vineland, N.J.) swam in the 400 IM, 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly at last year's conference meet will also be competing.
Freshman Petra Mijic (Split, Croatia) will be making her first appearance in the pool as a Spider. She comes too Richmond as a European and World Junior Open Water Qualifier.
