WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Richmond women's golf team defeated William & Mary Sunday on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort in the Spiders first competition in more than 11 months. Richmond posted a team score of 318 (+30), four shots lower than the Tribe's 322 (+34).
"I saw lots of good things that we are going to build off of," said coach Calle Barlow. "I'm very glad that we are getting back into the competitive mindset and I'm excited to see where this team will go this semester."
Juniors Naomi MItchell and Emily Ward led Richmond, firing scores of 77 (+5) and 78 (+6), respectively. Freshman Rory Weinfurther shot 80 (+8) in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Muskan Uppal provided Richmond's fourth team score with an 83 (+11).Â
Playing in soggy conditions on the 5,873-yard layout, senior Ally Steffen carded an 86 (+14).
Three members of the Spiders team competed as individuals. Sophomore Vicky Zhu shot 81 (+9). Freshman Claire Yioulos carded an 89 (+17) and sophomore Kendall Miller shot 94 (+22). Sunday was the first career competitive round for both Yioulos and Miller.Â
Mitchell's 77 was the top score among the 15 golfers playing in the match, and included birdies on the 413-yard 10th hole and 375-yard 11th hole. MItchell's stroke average of 77.11 was tops among Spiders to play in at least three events during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season.Â
Up next for the Spiders is a match against Virginia at Spring Creek Golf Club in Zions Crossroads, Va. on March 5.Â
