02/03/2021 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball announced its schedule for the 2021 spring season Wednesday evening. The Spiders are scheduled to compete in 44 games, 24 of which will be Atlantic 10 Conference games against the new Southern Division. The Atlantic 10 will be utilizing a two-division system to cut down on travel for league teams this season. The Spiders will compete in the South Division with Davidson, Dayton, George Mason, George Washington, Saint Louis and VCU.
"We're really excited to start this 2021 season." Head coach Tracy Woodson said, "This schedule took a tremendous amount of effort from our staff and coaches of other programs in our surrounding area to put this season together. We all face the difficulty of navigating this season, ensuring that our student-athletes are safe, healthy and we give them a chance to compete at a high level. We've been anxious to get back on the field since our 2020 season ended so abruptly and we're excited to get back out there."
The Spiders will begin the season with a four-game home series with Mount St. Mary's of the Northeastern Conference February 26th. The two programs will play four games over three days, with a doubleheader on the 27th and the series finale on the 28th.
The following weekend, Richmond will face a different opponent on all three days. The Spiders will open the weekend in Williamsburg, taking on William & Mary, followed by home contests against St. John's and VMI at Pitt Field Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Spiders will head to Charlottesville for a matchup with Virginia at Disharoon Park before taking an 11-day break.
The Spiders are back in action on the 20th as they will host Old Dominion at Pitt Field, before heading to George Mason for a non-conference matchup with the Patriots on the 21st. Richmond gets back to a three-game series on the 27th, taking on North Carolina Central at Pitt Field for a doubleheader, and heading to Durham for a matchup with NC Central on the 28th. Norfolk State visits Pitt Field on the 30th to close the month.
April opens with a Friday-Sunday split series with William & Mary. The Spiders head back to Williamsburg on the 2nd, before hosting the Tribe for a doubleheader on the 4th. The following weekend Richmond closes out the non-conference schedule with a split series with the Towson Tigers. Playing a home doubleheader on the 10th before heading to Towson for a single game on the 11th.
Atlantic 10 play opens with a trip to Saint Louis. The Spiders and Billikens will play a single game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday and close out the series with a single game on Sunday. The Spiders host the first of three-straight A-10 weekends beginning April 23rd as they host VCU (April 23-25), Davidson (April 30-May 2) and Dayton (May 7-9), all of which will feature the new four-game conference series schedule.
The regular season closes with back-to-back conference weekends away from Pitt Field. Richmond will head to George Washington for a series May 14-16, and ends the regular season with a four-game set at George Mason (May 20-22).
Unlike previous seasons, the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament will be hosted by the team who finishes the regular season first in the league. The conference tournament will feature the top two teams from the north and the south divisions, competing in a four-team double elimination tournament May 26-29.
