02/10/2021 | Football
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football program, in conjunction with Colonial Athletic Association Football, announced an 11-game schedule for the 2021 season Wednesday, highlighted by six home games at Robins Stadium.
The Spiders open the season with back-to-back home games for the first time since 1999 and the first time in Robins Stadium history. Richmond kicks off the season Sept. 4 hosting Howard for the second meeting all-time between the programs. The Spiders hosted the Bison in 2017, posting a 68-21 victory. Richmond plays its second-straight home game September 11, hosting Lehigh from the Patriot League. This marks the second meeting all-time between the two teams and the first since 1998.
Richmond opens CAA Football play the following week September 18, travelling to the Keystone State taking on Villanova. The teams have met for six-straight seasons from (2014-2019) with both teams winning three meetings in the last six contests, but the Wildcats have won the past two in the series.
The Spiders play their final non-conference game of the year September 25 travelling to Blacksburg taking on Virginia Tech. The two teams have met 50 times prior to the 2021 matchup but will be meeting for the first time since 1986 – the longest hiatus in series history. Richmond is 8-38-4 all-time against the Hokies, including a pair of wins in Blacksburg. The Spiders won their last meeting in Blacksburg at Lane Stadium, defeating Virginia Tech 24-14 September 7, 1985.
The Spiders open the month of October with two-straight at home, beginning October 2 hosting Elon before welcoming in rival James Madison to Robins Stadium October 9. The Spiders and Dukes have met 37 times in program history and the back-and-forth series sees the Dukes hold a slim 19-18 lead in the series.
Richmond travels to Stony Brook October 23 before making the trip to the Granite State October 30 against New Hampshire. The Spiders and Wildcats have not met since 2015 and Richmond has dropped its last five meetings in Durham.
The Spiders welcome November with a pair of home games, beginning November 6 hosting Towson for the first time since 2017. Richmond has won the last two meetings in the series, including a 31-28 victory in the Tigers' last visit to Robins Stadium in 2016. The regular season home schedule wraps up November 13 when the Spiders welcome in Delaware. Richmond won the last meeting against the Blue Hens 35-25 in Newark in 2019 in the game that saw Aaron Dykes set a program-record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the same game.
Richmond closes out the regular season in normal fashion against rival William & Mary Nov. 20 in Williamsburg. The game will be the 133rd meeting after the spring season, between the Spiders and the Tribe in "The South's Oldest Football Rivalry".
Ticket and attendance information, game time information and television information for the 2021 season will be released at a later date.
