WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – With 18 holes remaining at the Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate, the Richmond Spiders are in striking distance of their first team title in more than two years. The Spiders will enter Tuesday's final round at a combined 44-over par, just three shots behind tournament leader Delaware after grinding their way through blustery conditions on Monday.
Richmond was led by junior Emily Ward and freshman Rory Weinfurther in the first two rounds, with both shooting 153 (+9). Weinfurther's opening 76 was two shots better than any other Spider in Round 1, while Ward's 74 was three shots clear of any of her teammates in Round 2. Both Ward and Weinfurther are tied for third on the individual leaderboard, four shots behind leader Oihana Extezerrata from Delaware.
Ward was helped by a tournament-high four birdies over the first two rounds, while Weinfurther's 12 pars were tied for second most in the field as gusty winds and difficult pin positions kept scores high on Monday.
Junior Naomi Mitchell, the reigning Patriot League Golfer of the Week, and sophomore Muskan Uppal are tied for 12th at 157 (+13) after both shot 78 on Monday morning and 79 on Monday afternoon. Mitchell played the four par 3s on Kingsmill's River Course at a combined 1-under par, tied for the best of any golfer in the field of 67.
Sophomore Vicky Zhu is tied for 36th at 167 (+23) and freshman Claire Yioulos, playing as an individual, is tied for 28th at 165 (+21).
Richmond enters Tuesday in contention for its first tournament title since tying for first place with Appalachian State at the six-team Bucknell Spring Break Intercollegiate on March 11-12, 2019.
"I think conditions will be a little more favorable for us tomorrow with less wind," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "But we need to continue to stay patient!"
The third round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM.
