Spiders Finish Third at Ross Collegiate Classic
03/09/2021 | Men's Golf
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Showing few signs of rust following 13 months without competition, the Richmond Spider men's golf team finished third at the 13-team Ross Collegiate Classic at Mid Pines Golf Club on Tuesday. The Spiders combined to shoot 286 (-2) in the third and final round, six shots better than their Round 2 score, which was completed on Tuesday morning, and 19 shots better than the 305 the team posted in Round 1.
No team shot lower than Richmond in the final round as UR finished the 54-hole event at 883 (+19), one shot behind UNC Greensboro and eight shots behind Loyola Maryland. Richmond's third-place finish was the best by the Spiders in an event with 10 or more teams since winning the Atlantic 10 Championship in April 2017.Â
"It was great to be in contention after such a long break and it felt great to be competing for Richmond again," said coach Adam Decker. "We hung in well through a rough start to the morning and tough stretches of the golf course."
Junior Michael Childress was Richmond's top individual finisher, tying for seventh in the field of 82 at 2-over par. Childress shot a 2-under 70 in the third round en route to matching the best finish of his collegiate career.
Sophomore Lou Baker, who was competing as an individual, sandwiched rounds of 75 around a second-round 71 to finish at 5-over par, tied for 13th. Freshman Garrett Clark tied for 19th in his collegiate debut, following his opening-round 80 with rounds of 74 and 69 to finish at 7-over par.Â
Senior Andrew McInerney tied for 24th at 9-over par, while a pair of Spiders, sophomore Ben Cooper and junior Carter Cook, tied for 30th at 11-over as ever Spider finished in the top half of the field.Â
Richmond's next full-field event will be March 29-30 when the Spiders participate in the William & Mary Intercollegiate at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Wiliamsburg, Va.Â
