Spiders Stay Hot, Roll Longwood
03/21/2021 | Men's Golf
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Coming off their best finish in a full-field tournament in nearly four years, the Richmond Spiders men's golf team showed no signs of letting up anytime soon on Sunday, capturing eight-and-a-half of a possible nine points in a dominant performance against Longwood at Independence Golf Club.
"It was great to have some outside competition on our home course," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "That rarely happens. Thank you to Independence for making today possible. It's a great step in our journey to the conference championship in April."
Sunday's match consisted of nine golfers from each team seeded 1 through 9, with corresponding seeds matched up against each other in 18 holes of stroke play and one point going to the winner of each match.
Richmond, coming off a third-place finish at the Ross Collegiate Classic earlier this month, was paced by sophomore Ben Cooper, who birdied his final two holes to shoot a 3-under 69.
Three other Spiders finished under par, with seniors Michael Baker and Andrew McInerney and junior Michael Childress shooting 1-under rounds of 71. Baker birdied the 18th hole to even his match against Longwood's Brendan Dunphy and prevent the Lancers from winning a full point.
"The guys stayed patient on a tougher scoring day," said Decker. "A little wind and softer fairways from recent rain made things difficult. The greens at Independence are fantastic and if you gave yourself looks at birdie you had a good chance."
Richmond's two freshmen, Garrett Clark and Alex Campbell, each won a full point for the Spiders, with Clark shooting an even-par 72 and Campbell shooting 77 in his first collegiate competitive round.
Junior Carter Cook (73), senior Will Tamplin (74), and sophomore Lou Baker (76) also won their matches, providing plenty of breathing room for the Spiders in their 8.5-0.5 victory.
Richmond will be back in action in a week, traveling to Williamsburg, Va. to play in the William & Mary Intercollegiate at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club on March 29-30.
