BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Richmond Spiders women's golf team is third place after 36 holes at the Patriot League Championship, five strokes behind co-leaders Boston and Navy. Richmond played the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club in 45 strokes over par on Saturday, carding a 307 (+19) in Round 1 and a 314 (+26) in Round 2. The Spiders were led by junior Emily Ward and freshman Rory Weinfurther, who are among a group of six golfers tied for second place in the field of 35 at 153 (+9).
"I think it's a tough course," said Ward, "and totally different than what we're used to at home. There are a lot more placement shots and different clubs off the tee. The greens are really quick right now, so I think we had a hard time playing shots onto these greens."
Ward shot 76 in Round 1 on Saturday morning, then led the Spiders with a 77 in Round 2 in colder, windier conditions. Weinfurther opened with a team-best 74 in the first round and followed it with a 79 in the second round.
Sophomore Vicky Zhu is one shot behind Ward and Weinfurther at 154 (+10), alone in eighth place after rounds of 75 and 79 Saturday. Zhu recorded 22 pars, tied for second most in the field. Sophomore Muskan Uppal, like Zhu playing in her first conference championship after the 2020 Patriot League Championship was canceled due to COVID-19, is tied for 13th at 161 (+17).
Senior Ally Steffen is tied for 16th at 166 (+22) and junior Naomi Mitchell is tied for 18th at 167 (+23).
The Spiders will play with Navy and Bucknell again in Sunday's final round, while Boston will be paired with Lehigh and Holy Cross.
"We're going to need to stay extremely patient tomorrow," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow, "because the wind is going to be howling. I think conditions will be a little different. We're still right in it."
The Spiders tee times will begin at 8:30 AM Sunday on the 10th hole.
"The course might be playing a little bit tough tomorrow with the conditions, so I think we need to not get too ahead of ourselves," said Ward. "Just go out there and try to beat the course. Get the ball on the fairway. Get the ball on the green, and hopefully that will be enough."
