COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Spiders freshman Rory Weinfurther carded a 7-over 79 Monday in the first round of the NCAA Regionals on the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. Weinfurther, playing for the first time since winning medalist honors at the Patriot League Championship on April 25, started on the 10th tee and opened her round with seven straight pars before playing her final 11 holes in 7-over par.
It was Weinfurther's first time playing the course after Sunday's practice round was canceled due to rain. "It can be tough, definitely off the tee," said Weinfurther of the layout. "Luckily I hit pretty much every fairway. I just missed one or two. The greens are definitely where it's at. You need to make putts, which I just struggled with at the end of the round. It's not an easy golf course but it's a lot of fun."
Weinfurther is currently tied for 78th in the 96-person field which features some of the top teams and individuals across Division I. "It's kind of intimidating at first," said Weinfurther of playing in an event with such an accomplished field. "But I just have to realize that there's a reason I'm here. I deserve to be here so I'm going to just sit back and relax a little bit because it's going to be a really good experience. It's awesome being here. I'm really happy."
Weinfurther is scheduled to tee off in Tuesday's Round 2 at 8:50 AM. With her first round out of way, Weinfurther is looking forward to her final 36 holes, saying "I kind of know what to expect now, I think it will be much better. I've just got to work on putting. I think I'm going to go practice more short putts because that was the main thing. I think it will be a good next two days."
