COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Spiders freshman Rory Weinfurther shot a 6-over 78 in the final round of the Columbus NCAA Regional at The Ohio State University Golf Club on Wednesday, finishing the 54-hole event at 235 (+19). Weinfurther, who won the individual title at the Patriot League Championship in April to earn a spot in the NCAA Regionals, carded 10 pars, seven bogeys, and a birdie on the 17th hole on Wednesday, her first birdie of the event.Â
"I hit a great shot into the green," said Weinfurther. "I actually think it almost bounced in. That's what my Dad said. It rolled a little past pin-high. I had a little 12-footer, right-to-lefter, and I hit a good line. I liked my line on that putt and I just trusted it."
Weinfurther said her ball striking on Wednesday was her best in any round this week, but she wasn't always able to take advantage on the greens. "It was a little discouraging," said Weinfurther. "I had so many birdie tries and I just didn't make one until the 17th hole."
Weinfurther finished the event tied for 77th in the field of 96. "I think it was just a great experience being able to be here and playing with a whole lot of really good players," said Weinfurther. "It was also just really fun."
After rounds of 79, 78, and 78 in Columbus, Weinfurther finished her freshman year with a team-leading stroke average of 76.19 -- the best average for a freshman in program history and the seventh-best for any Spider in a single season.Â
Weinfurther admitted after the round that she didn't fully expect to have this type performance in her freshman campaign, adding "I'm really happy with how my season went."
