Women’s Track and Field Finishes Fourth at A-10 Outdoor Championship

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond women's track and field team completed the final day of the 2021 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championship by sweeping the 4x800 and 4x400 relays to finish fourth overall with 110 points.
The 4x800 relay team of Kendra Smither (Richmond, Va.), Maria Acosta (Maywood, N.J.), Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.) and Kayla O'Connell (Marshfield, Mass.) won the event with a time of 8:53.78. Smither lead off with a split time of 2:14.51, while Acosta pushed the Spiders lead out with 2:11.46 performance. McAndrew held the lead with a time of 2:16.41 and O'Connell put it out of contention with a time of 2:11.42.
In the 4x 400 relay, the final event of the day, Kayla Woods (Wilmington, Del.) and Rachel Helbling (McDonald, Pa.), Kamryn Ross (Richmond, Va.) and Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) combined to capture first-place and a new UR program record with a time of 3:41.75. The quartet broke the mark set at the 2021 Raleigh Relays of 3:43.19, ran by Woods, Helbling, Acosta and Fazio. Woods and Helbling combined for a staggered split time of 1:51.79. Ross turned in a split time of 57.11 in the third leg, before Fazio kicked it into another gear with a split time of 52. 86.
Richmond dominated in the 800m as all four runners collected points. Fazio, not only won the race, but turned in a meet record, personal best and lowered her UR program record time to 2:03.09. Acosta came in second with a personal best time of 2:05.13, while O'Connell turned in a fourth-place time of 2:07.34. Smither crossed at 2:11.23 to collect sixth-place.
Ross opened the day with a second-place finish, personal best and lowered her UR program record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.75.
In her first event of the day, Helbling won the 400m with a personal best time of 53.58.
Tamar Accius (Jacksonville, Fla.) came in second with a personal best time of 11.81 in the 100m in her first even of the day.
With just two lanes between them in the 200m, Accius finished second with a personal best mark of 24.03 while Helbling came in seventh, posting a time of 25.08.
Freshman Elizabeth Stockman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) kicked off her day with a second-place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:28.04. Fellow freshman Madison Trippett (Parkersburg, W.Va.) came in fourth-place with a time of 4:29.77, while Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.) took ninth, posting a time of 4:38.04.
Later in the day, Stockman finished fourth in the 5,000m, posting a time of 17:20.17. Trippett and Caroline Robelen (Glen Allen, Va.) also raced in the event and finished 16th (18:23.921) and 19th (18:42.09), respectively.
The Spiders return to action at the 2021 ECAC/IC4A Championships, May 14-16, in Springfield, Mass., hosted by American International College.
