Women’s Track & Field Heads to NCAA East Prelims

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's track & field team is set to open the 2021 NCAA Championships East Preliminary competition, Thursday, May 27 in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted at the Visit Jax Stadium by the University of North Florida.

Kayla Woods (Wilmington, Del.) is set to open competition for the Spiders with the long jump, set to go at 3 p.m. Thursday. Woods, who is slated for the flight two, qualified with an Atlantic 10 Championship title distance of 6.21m. Each participant gets three attempts with the top 12 places advancing to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Oregon.
In the 400m dash, Rachel Helbling (McDonald, Pa.) will line up for heat six, as the event is scheduled to start at 7:25 p.m. Helbling's qualifying mark of 53.58 was set with a first-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The top three from each heat, plus the next six best times advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. The top three times from each quarter final, plus the three next best times head to Oregon.
With six heats scheduled to start at 7:50 p.m., Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Maria Acosta (Maywood, N.J.) and Kayla O'Connell (Marshfield, Mass.) will line up for the 800m. Fazio will compete in heat one, seeded off of her 800m mark of 2:03.09 to win the title at the A-10 Championship ranks eighth in the East and 13th nationally. Acosta's time of 2:05.13, also achieved at the A-10 Championship, will race in heat five. O'Connell achieved her qualifying mark of 2:07.03 at the 53rd Tennessee Relays and will race in heat six. The top three times from each heat, plus the six next best times will advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. The top three times from each quarterfinal, plus the three next best times will compete in Oregon.
