Men’s Lacrosse Sweeps SoCon Awards, Places 11 On All-SoCon Teams

RICHMOND, Va. – The 18th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse program placed a Southern Conference record 11 members on the All-SoCon postseason teams and swept the major honors the league office announced Tuesday morning.
Senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, graduate long-stick midfielder Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year, attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) was named SoCon Freshman of the Year and head coach Dan Chemotti was named the SoCon Coach of the year. This marks the second time in SoCon history that a team has swept all four awards, joining the 2016 Air Force team.
The Spiders' 11 members on the first and second team All-SoCon is the most for a single team in league history. Richmond placed six members on the First Team All-SoCon and five members on the Second Team All-SoCon.
Earning First Team All-SoCon honors for the Spiders included Lanchbury at attack, Menges at long-stick midfield, graduate Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) at midfield, senior Jason Reynolds (Chester Springs, Pa.) on defense, graduate Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) at goalie and junior Jacob Griffin (Skokie, Ill.) at face-off.
The five Spiders named Second Team All-SoCon included Young at attack, sophomore Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) at attack, senior Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) at midfield, graduate Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) at short-stick midfield and senior Ray Baran (Berwyn, Pa.) on defense. Additiionally, Connell and Young were named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
Lanchbury becomes the first Spider in program history to be named SoCon Offensive Player of the Year. He ranks second in the SoCon in scoring with 59 points in 11 games, scoring 24 goals and dishing out 35 assists. In league play only, Lanchbury leads all scorers with 44 total points, 11 more than any other player, averaging 7.33 points per game in the six contests, which is a league record and more than a point better than any out player in league history. He was a three-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Week this year and was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Month in March.
Lanchbury scored 17 goals against SoCon opponents while leading the league with 27 assists. The two-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, enters the SoCon Tournament third all-time in league scoring history with 204 points, scoring 114 goals and dishing out 86 assists in his career.
Menges becomes the third Spider all-time to be name SoCon Defensive Player of the Year, joining the likes of Benny Pugh (2017) and Brendan Hynes (2015). The midseason All-American this year from Inside Lacrosse, Menges has caused a team-high 17 turnovers and picked up 30 ground balls. One of the top long-stick midfielders in the country, Menges is a two-time First Team All-SoCon selection and a preseason All-America pick this year. He helped the Spider defense to a 9.82 goals per game average, the lowest in the league this year.
Young becomes the first Spider in program history to be named SoCon Freshman of the Year. He leads the SoCon in scoring with 32 goals and ranks 16th in the nation at 2.91 goals per game earning Second Team All-Conference honors. Young in a two-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Week and a two-time USILA National Team of the Week selection. He has scored 24 of his 32 goals in league play, averaging 4.0 goals per game against SoCon opponents. Young was eligible for the award due the shortened 2020 season and no postseason SoCon honors awarded.
Chemotti picks up his second SoCon Coach of the Year accolade and his first since 2015. He led the Spiders to a share of the SoCon regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Spiders have been nationally ranked all season, peaking at No. 12 in the country and enters the tournament ranked 18th in the nation. The Spiders are 35-6 all-time in SoCon play in program history under Chemotti, winning four regular season titles and the last two SoCon Tournament crowns.
Shoults picks up his first career All-Conference honor this year. He has scored 25 points, tallying nine goals and 16 assists in the midfield. Nineteen of his points this season have come in league play. He has scored 97 points in his career, ranking seventh all-time in program history.
Reynolds is a three-time All-Conference selection on defense for the Spiders. He has played an started in 50-straight games for the Spiders. He is an anchor in the Spiders' defense that limited opponents to 9.82 goals against this year. He has caused 13 turnovers and picked up 16 ground balls.
Rusbuldt earns his first All-Conference selection of his career after leading the SoCon with a 9.96 goals against average. The 2019 SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Rusbuldt owns a .513 save percentage on the year with 111 saves. In league play, he held opponents to only 7.65 goals per game, almost three goals lower than any other goalie in the league this year.
Griffin picks up his first ever All-SoCon honors after an impressive league season at the face-off. He led the league in SoCon games winning 73 percent of his face-offs, going 65-of-89 in face-offs in five games. Overall on the season, he ranked second in the league at 61.6 percent (77-of-125). He was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions this year.
Connell picks up Second Team All-SoCon honors after finishing the year third in the SoCon in goals scored with 29. He led the league with nine man-up goals and is already the all-time career leader in Spider history with 16 man-up goals. In league play, Connell averaged 3.67 goals per game finishing second to Young with 22 goals in six games.
Savoca earns his second All-SoCon accolade of his career. The former All-America selection, Savoca tallied 13 points on the season from the midfield position, scoring eight goals and adding five assists. He ranks fifth in Richmond career scoring with 71 goals and seventh all-time in career points with 95 (71g, 24a).
Gallagher picks up his first career All-Conference honor, earning the selection as the short stick midfielder. The two-time team captain moved positions to short-stick midfielder this season and has thrived in his new role. He has picked up eight ground balls and scored two goals this season.
Baran rounds out the 11 All-Conference honors with his first selection of his career. Baran started all 11 games on defense and helped the Spiders to the lowest scoring output against in the league. He caused 11 turnovers on the year and picked up 24 ground balls. The 2019 SoCon All-Tournament selection, Baran has played in 35 career games, with 34 starts on defense the past three years.
