NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –The Atlantic 10 Conference has released its schedule pairings for the upcoming 2021-22 women's basketball season, the league announced Thursday. The league's 14 members will return to play a 16-game conference schedule in the upcoming season, which allows teams to face every opponent once and three teams twice. The Spiders will play home-and-home series against VCU, La Salle and Duquesne and face the other 10 teams in the conference once.
Richmond's other conference home opponents this season will be Davidson, Dayton, Fordham, Rhode Island, UMass, La Salle, Duquesne and VCU. Richmond will play La Salle, Duquesne and VCU twice this upcoming season. UR's other road games will be at St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's, George Washington, George Mason and Saint Louis.
Richmond will face crosstown rival VCU twice for the ninth-straight season. The two teams split meetings last year with the Spiders earning a road win at VCU, 69-64, on Jan. 24. The last time UR played La Salle twice was during the 2018-19 season when Richmond won both games. It is the first time since the 2004-05 season that Richmond will play Duquesne twice in the regular season.
UR is coming off a 13-9 overall record in 2020-21 in head coach Aaron Roussell's second season at the helm. Richmond was 9-6 in A-10 play and defeated George Washington in the A-10 Championship second round, 58-54 in overtime. The Spiders fell just short in the A-10 quarterfinals against third seeded Saint Louis, 59-58, in overtime. UR will return four of five starters, including two All-Conference performers in senior Kate Klimkiewicz and sophomore Addie Budnik, who earned A-10 Rookie of the Year honors in her first season as a Spider.
The Spiders complete 2021-22 conference schedule with dates and times will be released at a later date. The dates and location of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship have not been determined.
