Spiders Jump to 9 Seed in Latest ESPN Bracketology
07/15/2021 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond Spiders are a 9 seed in the Midwest Region in the latest edition of ESPN's Bracketology, an attempt to forecast the field for the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. ESPN Bracketologist Joe Lunardi projects that Richmond would face 8 seed LSU in the tournament's first round, with the winner likely earning a date against 1 seed Kansas.Â
In each of the previous two editions of Bracketology, Lunardi has pegged the Spiders an 11 seed in next March's tournament. In his initial forecast, released in April, Lunardi had Richmond as a 12 seed and one of the final four teams to earn a spot in the field of 68.Â
Richmond is slated to return 15 of its 16 players from the 2020-21 season, when the Spiders finished 14-9 and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT. That includes a quartet of 1,000-point scorers in Nathan Cayo, Jacob Gilyard, Grant Golden, and Nick Sherod, each of whom decided to return to Richmond for a final season after the NCAA granted all student-athletes an additional year of eligibility due to the effects of COVID-19.Â
