Underclassmen Pace Spiders Sunday at Kingsmill

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. --- The Richmond women's golf team entered the season with its most experienced roster in years, but it was a pair of underclassmen who led the Spiders Sunday at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in UR's first event of the 2021-22 campaign. Sophomore Rory Weinfurther, the reigning Patriot League individual champion, shot 75 (+3) in Round 1 on Sunday morning and 72 (E) in Round 2 on Sunday evening and is tied for 20th in the field of 79 at 147 (+3). Weinfurther played 21 holes before recording her first birdie on Sunday, finally breaking through on the par-4 9th hole in Round 2 and following it with another birdie on the par-4 10th. Bogeys on holes 12 and 2 dropped her back to an even-par 72, the low round of the day for Richmond.Â
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Lauren Jones carded back-to-back rounds of 75 (+3) and is currently tied for 31st at 150 (+6). Staring her day on the difficult par-4 8th hole, Jones was 4-over through three holes and 6-over through eight holes in Round 1. Jones rallied with birdies on holes 16, 2, and 3 to shoot 75 in her first collegiate round. Sunday afternoon, Jones was at even par through 14 holes before taking a double-bogey 6 on the 4th hole and a bogey 4 on the 5th hole. Jones' four birdies on Sunday were twice as many as any other Spider.Â
"It was great to see Rory and Lauren play well," said Richmond coach Calle Barlow. "We're a pretty experienced team but I'm excited to see what impact our underclassmen are going to have this season."
As a team, the Spiders are tied for eighth in the 15-team field at 601 (+25) with 18 holes remaining on Monday. On Sunday, Richmond led the field in pars with 129 but managed just 11 birdies, fewest for any team.Â
Senior Emily Ward shot rounds of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5) Sunday and is tied for 37th at 152 (+8), one shot in front of teammate Muskan Uppal, a junior. Uppal, who shot 76-77/153 (+9) Sunday, recorded her only birdie of the day on her final hole Sunday afternoon, the par-4 8th. Senior Naomi Mitchell is tied for 50th at 154 (+10) following rounds of 75 (+3) and 79 (+7).Â
Playing as an individual, junior Vicky Zhu opened with an 83 (+11) in Round 1 and shot 80 (+8) in Round 2. She is in 75th place at 163 (+19).Â
Monday's final round will start with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM.Â
