Kemly’s Late Goal Lifts Spiders to Conference-Opening Win
09/19/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond soccer team opened up Atlantic 10 play Sunday afternoon at President's Field as the squad hosted St. Bonaventure, and thanks to a late goal from senior Jaclyn Kemly, the Spiders came away with the 1-0 win. Richmond improves to 3-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play while the Bonnies drop to 3-3-3 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. The Spiders also remain unbeaten (3-0-1) on the home pitch so far this season.
Kemly's goal came on the tail end of a battle in which the Spiders outshot the Bonnies 15-5. Credited with the assist, Molly Wierman sent Richmond's 13th corner kick of the game into the middle of the box in the 88th minute, and Kemly was able to punch it in off her left foot to break through and get the Spiders on the board. The goal would prove to be the game-winner and Kemly's first career goal on her first shot of the season.
Nine different Spiders registered a shot in the match, led by Wierman and TJ Anderson who had three each, while all three of Wierman's shots reached the target. Jessie Prillaman and Gianna Lucchesi each recorded two shots, and five other Spiders had one shot.
The Spider backline held the Bonnies to just five shots in the match, and goalkeeper Claire Hinkle made one save to record her second shutout of the season, and Richmond's second consecutive shutout as a team. The Spiders have now gone 276 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.
Richmond wraps up a four-game homestand this coming Thursday when the Spiders welcome Fordham to President's Field on Sept. 23 for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
