GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Naomi Mitchell and junior Vicky Zhu paced the Spiders women's golf team Sunday in the opening round of the Bryan National at Bryan Park Golf Club. After spending much of the day in red figures, Mitchell and Zhu slipped back to even par over Sunday's closing holes and are among a group of four golfers tied for 14th in the field of 66. Richmond's entire lineup combined for 13 birdies on the day -- tied for fourth-most in the field -- but failed to register any on holes 16, 17, and 18.
"I said after Kingsmill that we needed to make more birdies so it was great to see everyone get at least one birdie today," said coach Calle Barlow. "This course is in really great shape and the greens are similar to the ones we play on at Independence [Golf Club], so hopefully we can continue to make putts over the next two days."
As a team, Richmond is in sixth place among 11 teams at 297 (+9), one shot behind North Carolina State of the ACC and one shot in front of Patriot League-rival Boston University.Â
Mitchell offset two straight bogeys to open her round with birdies on holes 4, 5, and 6 and reached 2-under when she birdied the par-3 12th hole. Zhu was 3-under par after birdieing the par-5 15th hole but closed with a bogey on the 17th hole and a double bogey on the 18th hole.Â
Senior Emily Ward is tied for 34th after shooting 76 (+4), one shot better than sophomore Rory Weinfurther, who is in 41st place at 5-over par. Freshman Lauren Jones opened with a 78 (+6) Sunday and is tied for 42nd place.Â
Richmond took advantage of the the four par-5s at Bryan Park Sunday, combining to play those four holes in 4-under par, the best of any team in the field. Round 2 of the 54-hole event will be played Monday.Â
Playing as an individual in her college debut, freshman Christine Mandile rebounded from a 46 on the front 9 to shoot 34 on the back 9. She is tied for 49th at 8-over par.Â
