Five Friday Night ESPN Network Games Highlight Men’s Basketball A-10 Schedule
09/09/2021 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders men's basketball team will play 11 nationally-televised games as part of its conference schedule, including five Friday night games on ESPN networks, the Atlantic 10 announced Thursday. Richmond's five Friday night ESPN games are tied with St. Bonaventure for the most of any A-10 school.
"I'm thrilled that we're going to have the opportunity to play several showcase games in front of a national audience," said head coach Chris Mooney. "We know that we have a deep, experienced roster, and we feel like we have the chance to be a very good team. It's great that we'll have the chance to measure ourselves on these big stages against the rest of an extremely talented and competitive conference."
Richmond's slate of five Friday night ESPN network games will begin at home vs Davidson on January 14. The Spiders will also play on Friday night on ESPN2 on February 4 vs St. Bonaventure, February 18 at VCU, February 25 vs Saint Louis, and March 4 at St. Bonaventure, with all games tipping at 7 PM.
This season will be the first time in more than 50 years that the Spiders play five conference games on Fridays. In 1965-66, Richmond faced Southern Conference opponents The Citadel (twice), Davidson, Furman, and West Virginia on Fridays. In addition to their five Friday ESPN games, Richmond will play six more A-10 games in front of a national television audience: five on CBS Sports Network and one on an NBC Universal platform to be determined.
Richmond's conference schedule will tip off at the Robins Center on December 30 as UR hosts Saint Joseph's at 7 PM. On January 2, the Spiders will visit Saint Louis in a game that will be televised on CBS Sports Network before returning home to face Massachusetts in Richmond on January 5 at 7 PM.
Following a game at Fordham on January 8, the Spiders will spend two weeks in Richmond, hosting George Mason on January 11 at 7 PM and Davidson on January 14 on ESPN2 or ESPNU before an eight-day break.
Richmond will return to action with back-to-back nationally-televised road games at La Salle on an NBC Universal platform to be determined on January 22 at 4:30 PM and at Rhode Island on CBS Sports Network on January 25. On January 29, Richmond will host VCU on CBS Sports Network in the first game of the Richmond Area Honda Dealers Capital City Classic.
Following a February 1 visit to Duquesne, the Spiders won't leave the state of Virginia for three weeks. During that span, UR will host St. Bonaventure (February 4 on ESPN2 at 7 PM) and La Salle (February 12 at 6 PM) and visit George Mason (February 9) and VCU (February 18 on ESPN2 at 7 PM as part of the Richmond Area Honda Dealers Capital City Classic). The next time the Spiders leave Virginia, it will be for a short trip across state lines to face George Washington in Washington, D.C. on February 22.
Richmond's conference schedule will conclude with a home game against Saint Louis on February 25 on ESPN2 at 7 PM, a March 1 home game vs Dayton on CBS Sports Network, and a March 4 road game at St. Bonaventure on ESPN2 at 7 PM.
In addition to its Atlantic 10 schedule, Richmond unveiled start times for its non-conference home games on Wednesday. Richmond's season-opener against North Carolina Central on November 9 will begin at 7 PM, as will its November 16 matchup with Georgia State and its November 22 home game vs Hofstra. UR's December 11 home game vs Toledo will be at 6 PM, and the Spiders home games vs Old Dominion on December 19 and Bucknell on December 22 will start at 4 PM. Television broadcast information for all Robins Center games not aired on national television will be announced at a later date.
Mooney, the winningest basketball coach in Richmond basketball history, will return for his 17th season with the Spiders in 2021-22. His team returns 15 of 16 players from last year's roster which reached the NIT Quarterfinals, including four 1,000-point scorers: Grant Golden, Jacob Gilyard, Nick Sherod, and Nathan Cayo.
