Gilyard matches career high with 31 in win at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – Jacob Gilyard scored a game-high 31 points, his most in more than three years, to lead Richmond to an 83-70 win over Fordham at Rose Hill Gym Tuesday.
Gilyard made 11 of his 15 shots from the field, including six of his 10 three-point attempts. His 31 points matched his career high, originally set in a win vs IUPUI on November 16, 2018. Gilyard's 31 points Tuesday were the most points scored by a Spider since Grant Golden totaled 33 vs Wyoming on November 21, 2018.
"I can shoot the ball, and I work on my shot a lot," said Gilyard. "At the end of the day, shooters have to shoot. I have a lot of confidence in myself and I've been able to show that the last two games." (Gilyard led Richmond with 28 points Friday with Davidson.)
He also added three rebounds, two assists, and a team-high three steals. "I thought he really did a great job all around and he was certainly just amazing tonight," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney of Gilyard.
Three other Spiders scored in double digits, with Nathan Cayo totaling 13, Grant Golden scoring 11, and Andre Gustavson adding 11 and a team-high seven rebounds – matching his career high -- in his first start of the season.
"He's a really good player and he's started a lot of games for Richmond in his career," said Mooney. "I thought that he was just playing really well and gave him the start and he certainly had a great stat line." Gustavson also recorded a pair of steals and a block.
Fordham led 14-8 just over nine minutes into the game before Gilyard hit Richmond's first three-pointer with 11:35 left in the 1st half. He would add three more three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, with the final one coming just in front of the Fordham bench two seconds before halftime to give the Spiders a 37-33 lead at intermission.
Fordham evened the score at 37 just seconds into the second half. Later, the Rams pulled within one with 7:34 to play when a three-pointer by Antrell Charlton cut Richmond's lead to 62-61. But another three-pointer from Gilyard started a 10-0 Spiders run that put UR ahead 72-61 with less than four minutes to play.
The win was Richmond's fourth straight vs Fordham and its 18th in its last 19 meetings with the Rams. Chris Mooney is now 18-5 vs Fordham, his most wins vs any opponent.
Golden became the fourth player in Richmond history -- and the fourth active player in Division I – to register 2,000 career points on a jumper in the lane with 2:24 to play in the first half. He joined Michael Perry, Kevin Anderson, and UR's all-time leading scorer Johnny Newman as the only players to score 2,000 career points at Richmond.
Tuesday's game opened a three-game road swing for the Spiders. Up next is a game at La Salle Saturday at 4:30 PM on USA Network.
