RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team was edged out by Elon, 4-2, Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on the campus of VCU.
The Spiders earned the doubles point and Carly Cohen picked up the win at No. 2 singles before Richmond fell in the grueling battle.
"Today was a great battle with good, close matches. We needed this," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "Our doubles looked strong, and Carly Cohen responded well to moving up to the No. 2 spot. Overall, today was very encouraging, but we've still got plenty of work to do."
Cohen led the Spiders on the day with a doubles win on Court 2 in combination with Polina Shitikova. The pair took down Julie Ball and Victoria Saldh 6-2, and Cohen later defeated Saldh in singles, 6-1, 6-1.
The Richmond duo of Helene Heiberg and Marta Buendia also picked up a doubles win on Court 3 as they defeated Olivia Archer and Alison O'Dea 6-2.
It was a three-set thriller in No. 1 singles as Emily Dunbar dropped the first set to Sibel Tanik, 6-3, before taking the next one 4-6 to force the decisive third set, and Tanik took the tiebreaker 7-2.
