Richmond, Va.— Fifteen FCS players – one from each conference in college football's Division I subdivision – were announced on Wednesday as finalists for the 2022 FedEx Ground Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award with redshirt junior linebacker Tristan Wheeler earning the nod out of the Colonial Athletic Association.
Named after the late school teacher and wife of legendary coach Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, the eighth annual award is presented to an FCS student-athlete who excels not only on the playing field and in the classroom, but in the community and beyond.
Named a Buck Buchanan Award finalist, Wheeler is on pace for his third-straight 100+ tackles season in full football seasons (2019 and fall 2021).
So far this season he has 97 tackles (47 solos), nine tackles for loss (-24 yards), two sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakups and three quarterback hurries. He recorded a career-high 19 tackles to open the season at Virginia. Wheeler has started 35-straight games since his freshman season— the most of any Spider.
Wheeler was named the recipient of the CAA's Chuck Boone Leadership award, given to a junior or senior CAA Football student-athlete who embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in his academic and athletic achievements. The composite award encompasses three areas: academics, athletics and leadership.
Wheeler does all this and more while working towards a degree in health studies from one of the most academically rigorous universities in the country. He is a two-time Dean's List recipient and has been named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll four times.
