Bronx, N.Y. — Richmond's defense forced three turnovers, including a strip sack by Camden Byrd that Jordan Allen recovered for a touchdown, but the Spiders fell to Fordham, 20-14, Saturday afternoon at Moglia Stadium.
Richmond (5-2, 3-1 Patriot League) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and suffered its first Patriot League loss of the year as Fordham (2-5, 2-2) scored the game's final 13 points, including the go-ahead touchdown with 2:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Spiders finished with 204 yards of offense, including 122 passing and 82 rushing, while Fordham totaled 258 yards. Richmond forced three turnovers, recovering two fumbles and recording an interception, while committing two turnovers of its own.
Fordham opened the scoring on its first possession, marching 76 yards in nine plays before Gunnar Smith connected with Ricky Gonzalez II for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 11:07 remaining in the first quarter.
Richmond responded with a 14-play, 86-yard drive that consumed 8:31 and extended into the second quarter. Quarterback Ashten Snelsire capped the possession with a six-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Allen on third-and-goal, tying the game at 7-7 with 14:12 remaining before halftime.
Fordham threatened to regain the lead on its ensuing possession, advancing to the Richmond 20 before Bennett Henderson's 37-yard field goal attempt struck the upright and fell no good. Neither team scored again before halftime, sending the teams into the break tied at 7-7.
The third quarter featured four turnovers between the two teams, with Richmond's defense accounting for the Spiders' second touchdown of the afternoon.
Early in the quarter, Richmond recovered its own punt after the ball struck a Fordham player. Krystian Williams recovered the loose ball at the Fordham 37, giving Richmond possession in Rams territory, but the Spiders were forced to punt.
Two possessions later, Byrd broke through the Fordham offensive line and sacked Smith for a 13-yard loss, forcing a fumble in the end zone. Jordan Allen recovered the ball for his first career touchdown and Richmond's first defensive score of the season, giving the Spiders a 14-7 lead with 11:59 remaining in the third quarter. The sack was the 25th of Byrd's career, moving him into a tie for second on Richmond's all-time career sacks list.
Fordham recovered an Aziz Foster-Powell fumble at the Richmond 18 on the ensuing series, but the Spider defense prevented the Rams from capitalizing. Jordan Allen intercepted Smith at the Richmond 12, recording his second career interception and giving Richmond possession back with 9:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Fordham eventually pulled even on a two-yard touchdown run by Jamell James with 4:36 remaining in the third, completing a five-play, 50-yard drive that tied the game at 14-14.
The teams remained tied into the fourth quarter, when Richmond advanced to the Fordham 36 following a 10-play possession that included three first downs. Facing fourth-and-eight, Snelsire was sacked for a two-yard loss, turning the ball over on downs with 8:10 remaining.
Fordham followed with a 12-play, 62-yard drive that consumed 5:47. Smith capped the possession with a five-yard touchdown run with 2:23 remaining, giving the Rams a 20-14 lead after the extra-point attempt was unsuccessful.
Richmond took possession at its own 25 with 2:23 left and advanced to its 46-yard line before Snelsire's pass was intercepted by Boogie Owens with 1:11 remaining. Fordham picked up a first down on its ensuing possession and ran out the remaining clock.
