Spiders sputter to road loss at Toledo

TOLEDO, OHIO – The Richmond Spider men's basketball team faded down the stretch in a 90-67 road loss to the Toledo Rockets Wednesday. The Rockets outscored Richmond 33-16 over the game's final 11 minutes to secure their first win in three all-time meetings with the Spiders.
Tyler Burton led Richmond with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Jason Roche came off the bench to score 14 points while shooting 4-6 from three-point range.
"I know that on the offensive end I can bring the shooting and spacing the floor and stuff," said Roche. "But I have to bring more than one thing. If I see that we're lacking a little bit of energy, me and the other guys off the bench, it's our job to bring energy and pick the other guys up."
Richmond's bench totaled 22 points, the most by the Spiders reserves since a lopsided season-opening win vs VMI. But as a team Richmond connected on a season-low 36.2 percent of its field goal attempts (21-58). After the game, Richmond coach Chris Mooney said that the Spiders troubles on the offensive end were evident early in many possessions.
"We were not nearly as crisp as we need to be," said Mooney. "We need to make sure that each possession starts well. The first pass being crisp, that usually dictates a good possession. When you have bad start that often leads to a bad possession. We certainly didn't do a good enough job tonight."
The Spiders led 21-19 with seven minutes remaining in the first half after Andre Gustavson hit his second three-pointer of the night, part of a 5-8 start for the Spiders from three-point range.
But three straight layups by the Rockets made the score 25-21 in favor of Toledo. The Rockets then outscored Richmond 11-4 over the final two minutes of the half to take a 40-33 lead at intermission.
Toledo took control of the game at the start of the second half, opening the period on a 14-3 run to push its lead to 54-36. Richmond responded with a 15-3 stretch that was capped by a pair of three-pointers from Roche to close UR's deficit to 57-51 with 11:39 to play.
From that point on, it was all Toledo as the Rockets clamped down on defense, holding the Spiders to three field goals on 13 attempts over the remainder of the contest.
With the loss, Richmond fell to 3-4 on the season. The Spiders will travel to William & Mary Saturday to face the Tribe, with tip scheduled for 7 PM on FloHoops.
"I'm confident they'll have fight and they'll be ready to go tomorrow," said Mooney of his team.
