Greetings from the University of Richmond and Spider Athletics!
Â
Though we only spend a few short years in college, the strong bonds we form with our alma mater last much longer, especially at a place as special as the University of Richmond. That's why I know I'll see so many of you on campus this weekend as we celebrate another exciting homecoming. And when we gather this weekend, we will indeed have much to celebrate, for our student-athletes continue to succeed in many different ways.
On the gridiron, our Spiders have won six of their last seven games and will have a chance to climb into first place in the CAA with a win Saturday vs. New Hampshire, who enters the game unbeaten in conference play. Quarterback Reece Udinski, the nation's most accurate passer, and the 14th-ranked Spiders will be tested by a Wildcat defense that ranks among the best in the conference. A Homecoming football game on a beautiful fall Saturday between a pair of nationally-ranked teams with first place on the line – what more could a Spider ask for?
Â
Well, how about the chance to see some of the best Spiders in Richmond history in the same place at the same time? During Saturday's game, we're thrilled to be joined by the 2022 class of the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame as well as the Spiders selected to the Southern Conference's 100th Anniversary Team. Just hours after their enshrinement on Friday evening, we'll honor Belle Koclanes '02, Lori Regester Brown '88, Uly Scott '95, Greg Stevenson '01, Jarod Stevenson '98, and members of the 2002 A-10 champion women's soccer team at halftime. We'll also have a chance to recognize some legendary Spiders who were selected to the Southern Conference's 100th Anniversary Team, men who built the foundation upon which Richmond football's proud history rests. It will be great to have Walker Gillette, Pat Kelly, Buster O'Brien, and Buddy Stoudt back in front of a crowd of cheering Spider fans, more than a half-century after they suited up in blue and red.
Â
Those willing to extend Homecoming weekend by a day have the chance to see men's basketball take to the Robins Center court for the first time since winning the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship. The Spiders will tip-off their season on November 7 vs. VMI, part of a two-game homestand that will continue November 11 vs. Northern Iowa. Prior to our game with Northern Iowa, we'll present members of last year's team with their championship rings and raise a pair of banners to the rafters of the Robins Center: one recognizing UR's appearance in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and another celebrating the team's 2022 A-10 title. It promises to be a memorable moment in honor of a remarkable team Spider fans won't soon forget. I hope you can be there to share it with us.
Â
Our women's basketball team is also looking to build on last year's winning record. The Spiders have strung together back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time in a decade and have decided to test themselves against a challenging non-conference schedule that includes a visit from ACC-opponent Duke on December 4. Our women hope to have a rabid crowd of Spiders supporters behind them as they host the Blue Devils. I hope you will join me at the Robins Center on December 4 and throughout the season. Single-game tickets, group packages, and season tickets are still available for both the women's and men's programs.
Â
While our powerhouse swimming & diving program started off its home season with wins over Duquesne and Davidson in the Richmond Duals last month, the competitive season has already concluded for a trio of Richmond Athletics programs. Last weekend, cross-country hosted the Atlantic 10 championship at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, where the men placed 11th and the women finished sixth with a pair of runners, Madison Trippett and Laurel Kurtz, earning All-Conference honors.
Â
Spider field hockey's fall season served as a great example of just how thin the margin between victory and defeat can be in Division I athletics. Richmond finished 6-12, with eight losses coming by a single goal. I have no doubt our program will be resilient and bounce back to the top of the Atlantic 10.
Â
Women's soccer completed its season with a record of 3-10-4. We have now begun a national search for the next head coach of the program.
Â
I'm confident that all of our programs have the potential to compete at a championship level because I've seen the tremendous support they have from our alumni, our fans, and our friends. The Pow[HER] On campaign, a joint effort by the Spider Athletic Fund and Spider Performance & Development to support women's athletics and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, launched earlier this semester and has already raised more than $60,000 in support of our women's sports programs. The success of this new initiative is another testament to the tremendous generosity and philanthropy of Spider Nation.
Â
As you know, due to changes in the governance of college athletics, our student-athletes can now directly benefit from the use of their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). NIL is a new and powerful force in college sports, and Richmond is doing everything in its power to make sure that Spiders can take full advantage of its potential rewards. In this regard, we have partnered with Opendorse to create the Richmond Spiders NIL Marketplace, a platform that will allow fans, businesses, brands, and sponsors a way to easily find, pitch, book, and compensate our student-athletes for their NIL services.
Â
Our Spiders are dedicated individuals who excel athletically, academically, and in our greater community. We are providing them with support and opportunities to become the next generation of leaders. And they are deserving of all the support we can provide them to fully develop to their potential. Thank you for all you do for them and for Richmond Athletics.
Â
Take care, and I look forward to seeing you on campus this weekend or in the very near future!
Â
Go Spiders!!
