Pair of highly-rated recruits comprise Men's Basketball signing class

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond men's basketball announced the members of its 2023 signing class Wednesday, the first day prospective student-athletes enrolling in college in 2023 were eligible to sign a National Letter of Intent. Trevor Smith from Newport News, Va. and Collin Tanner from Creedmor, N.C. signed NLIs with the program and will attend the University of Richmond next school year.
Smith, a 6'0" guard who attends Woodside High School, is the fourth-ranked recruit in the state of Virginia in the Class of 2023, according to the composite rankings developed by 247 Sports. Smith, rated a top-200 national prospect and a top-30 national point guard recruit, is Richmond's highest-rated recruit on record. Smith verbally committed to the Spiders last April after receiving interest from several Division I programs, including Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Florida, and Georgetown.
Smith's father Tim is the all-time leading scorer at East Tennessee State University, totaling 2,300 points for the Buccaneers during his career. He was named the 2006 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year in ETSU's first season in the conference after earning First Team All-Southern Conference honors in 2004 and 2005.Â
Trevor Smith is a member of Virginia's Team Loaded AAU organization. As a junior at Woodside last season, he averaged 23 points per game en route to earning First Team All-Peninsula District honors.Â
Smith will be joined by Collin Tanner of Creedmor, N.C. in the Spiders signing class. Tanner, a 6'6" guard who preps at Combine Academy, is the fifth-ranked recruit in North Carolina in the Class of 2023, according to HoopSeen.com. He received more than 10 Division I offers, including one from Richmond's Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure.Â
Tanner is a member of the Team Curry AAU program. He averaged 22 points and eight rebounds per game at Wayne Country Day School last season, leading the team to a 25-8 record and berth in the NCISAAÂ 2A semifinals.
