Nelson earns second A-10 Rookie of the Week honor

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Spiders redshirt freshman Jason Nelson has been named the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Nelson led all players with 19 points in Richmond's 82-52 win over Drake Saturday. Nelson, who was also named A-10 Rookie of the Week on November 14, is the first two-time winner of the award this season.Â
Nelson helped the Spiders to their most impressive win of the season Saturday at the Robins Center, as UR defeated MVC preseason favorites Drake, who entered the game 8-1, 82-52. Nelson scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half, when Richmond zoomed out to a 17-0 lead to take control of the game. He finished the game shooting 6-9 from the field, 3-3 from three-point range, and 4-5 from the foul line as Richmond posted the largest margin of victory in program history against an opponent who entered the game seven or more games above .500.
Nelson, who is averaging 11.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game this season, is the first Spider to win multiple A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in a season since Grant Golden in 2017-18. He and the rest of the Spiders will host FDU Tuesday at 7pm at the Robins Center.
