RICHMOND, Va. -- A pair of Richmond Spiders have been named finalists for the second annual RVA Sports Awards, honoring the best in athletics among those with ties to the Richmond region. Spiders men's basketball coach Chris Mooney is one of three finalists for the Brown Distributing Coach of the Year after leading Richmond to the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship and a spot in the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament. Lindsey Frank, an All-Atlantic 10 selection in both lacrosse and field hockey, is one of four finalists Kings Dominion Female Athlete of the Year.
Fan voting is open now and will run through January 15. The winners will be unveiled during the RVA Sports Awards Ceremony at the Altria Theater on February 4. Tickets to the event are available, and the ceremony will also air live on CBS 6 WTVR.Â
Mooney led Richmond to its second Atlantic 10 Championship during his tenure in March 2022, becoming one of just 11 coaches in A-10 history with multiple league titles. The Spiders won four games in four days in Washington, D.C. en route to the title, including victories over 3-seed VCU, 2-seed Dayton, and 1-seed Davidson. In the NCAA Tournament, Mooney led 12-seed Richmond to an upset win over 5-seed Iowa, the Big Ten champions. Mooney, the winningest coach in Richmond basketball history, is currently in his 18th season with the Spiders.Â
Frank was the leading scorer for both Spider women's lacrosse and Spider field hockey in 2022, earning First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in both sports. During the spring, Frank led the Richmond lacrosse team to a 14-4 record while recording 72 points in 18 games and finishing second in the conference in goals per game. This fall, Frank led Richmond field hockey with a career-high 21 points. In addition to All-Conference honors, Frank was also named named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-South Region Second Team for a second straight season.
Longtime Richmond Spiders fan and the "Mayor of Richmond Sports" Will Daniel was also recognized for his contributions to athletics in the region. Daniel is one of three finalists for the Fan of the Year Award.Â
