Tristan Wheeler, Ryan Coll Named All-Americans by Phil Steele
12/22/2022 | Football
Wheeler was Richmond's leading tackler with 110 (54 solo, 56 asst.) including 11 for loss (-29). He also had two sacks (-9), two interceptions, three pass breakups and seven quarterback hurries on the year. His 110 tackles were the second-most in the CAA this season as he eclipsed the 100 tackles mark for the third-straight full season of football (2019, 2021 fall, 2022). Wheeler currently ranks sixth among active leaders in career tackles per game with 9.15 and has started 37-straight games—the most of any Spider.
Wheeler and the Richmond defense held the nation's No. 1 rushing offense to just 123 yards in the 41-0 playoff shutout victory over Davidson. Prior to the contest, the Wildcats averaged 350.5 ground yards per game.
In 2019, Wheeler was named First Team Freshman All-American by Phil Steele and earlier this week, was named a Second Team All-American by Stats Perform FCS for the third-straight year.
On the other side of the ball, Coll was part of an offensive line that led the Spiders to the third-highest producing offense in the CAA at 424.1 yards per game. He protected graduate quarterback Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) all season and helped the Spiders rank fourth in the CAA in average scoring with 31.3 points per game. Coll started each game this season and guided Richmond to its first trip to the playoffs since 2016 and its first-ever playoff shutout victory with the 41-0 win against Davidson in the first round.
In total, the Spiders picked up 5,513 yards of offense— the second highest in the CAA— with Coll leading the way. Earlier this month, Coll was also named an Associated Press Second Team All-American.
