Spiders Down Explorers Behind Klimkiewicz’s Career Day
02/13/2022 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Kate Klimkiewicz posted her second double-double in three games with a career-high 26 points Sunday afternoon as the Spiders returned to the win column with a 77-58 victory over La Salle at home. With the win, the Spiders (14-11, 5-7 A-10) split the season series with the Explorers (12-11, 5-6 A-10).
It was also the annual Play4Kay breast cancer awareness game, benefitting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. In honor of his mother-in-law who passed away from breast cancer, head coach Aaron Roussell and his wife pledged to donate $20 for every 3-pointer the Spiders made in the game, as well as every 3-pointer the men's team made against La Salle Saturday night.
"I'm really proud of our group and I told them after the game that I think we were really fun to watch today," said Coach Roussell. "La Salle is a really explosive team, and when we're playing well, we feel like we can be an explosive team as well. It was a really good performance for us. I'm proud of our kids and I'm happy for them that they can enjoy this one today. "It was also a big deal to win the Play4Kay game. We talked yesterday that we're not going to say this is bigger than basketball or that we're playing for a cause if we're not going to have some traction behind that."
The Spiders won the tip and got off to a hot start as Addie Budnik drained a three 20 seconds into the game and helped Richmond race out to a 10-0 lead. The Spiders, who didn't miss a shot until the 3:21 mark in the first, then went on an 11-0 run to push their lead to 21-3. Richmond led 24-12 on 10-of-14 shooting after the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter started off in a similar fashion as Cayla Williams knocked down a triple 40 seconds into the frame, and later, Klimkiewicz swiped two passes that both led to layups in a span of 20 seconds to extend the lead to 31-14. Richmond held a 39-25 lead at the half.
Richmond's lead reached 20 points midway through the third thanks to a quick 6-0 run, and Klimkiewicz made it a 21-point lead with an and-one at 2:57. Emma Squires drilled one from deep and hit a pair of late free throws to help the Spiders to a 64-42 lead heading into the fourth.
La Salle knocked down a couple of early threes in the fourth and chipped its deficit down to 15 points at 6:03, but then entered a scoring drought spanning almost four minutes. Grace Townsend hustled for and offensive rebound that led to another Klimkiewicz 3-pointer for her career-high in points at 2:12, and Sydney Boone added another triple in the last 25 seconds to close the scoring for Richmond in the game.
