Gilyard sets A-10 career assists record
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Richmond's three starting forwards combined for 51 points and shot 20-30 from the field to lead the Spiders to a wire-to-wire 84-71 win at George Washington Tuesday.
Nathan Cayo scored a season-high 19 points, Tyler Burton added 17, and Grant Golden finished with 15 points and a team-high six assists. Guard Jacob Gilyard also scored 15 points as four Spiders finished with 15 or more points for the first time since December 30, 2020 at Davidson (Burton, Cayo, Golden, and Blake Francis).
"It makes it harder and harder for the defense to single in on one guy or to double team or to only focus on one [player]," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney of his team's balanced attack.
Cayo made nine of his 11 shots from the field en route to his highest-scoring output since scoring 25 vs Saint Joseph's on March 1, 202
"I thought Nate was great tonight. I thought it was one of his best games – strong and aggressive."
After entering the night tied with Temple's Howard Evans for the most assists in Atlantic 10 history at 748, Gilyard took sole possession on the conference's career assists list with a cross-court pass to Nick Sherod for a transition three-pointer with 12:39 left in the 1st half. The shot was the 237th three-pointer of Sherod's career, tying David Gonzalvez for the fourth-most in Richmond history.
Golden inched higher on the Spiders career scoring list, finishing the night with 2,153 points to pass Mike Perry (2,145) for the third-most points in program history.
Richmond never trailed, opening the game on a 10-4 run and leading by as many as 11 in the first half. GW scored the final seven points going into the locker room to cut its deficit to 39-35 at halftime.
The Colonials came within two points of the Spiders with 15:52 to play when a three-pointer by James Bishop made the score 47-45 Richmond. But a 15-6 Spiders run put UR up by double digits again at 62-51 with 11 minutes remaining. GW would never again get closer than seven.
The win was Richmond's fifth straight vs GW, the Spiders longest win streak in series history, which dates back to 1926. Richmond is now 8-3 in its last 11 games following a 1-3 start to Atlantic 10 play.
Up next for Richmond is a home date with Saint Louis on Friday. Tip time is 7 PM and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
