Spiders fire 13-under 275 in win over Columbia
02/25/2022 | Men's Golf
MIDLTOHIAN, Va. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team looked to be in midseason form as it opened its spring campaign Friday with a 12-stroke victory over Columbia at Independence Golf Club. Richmond combined for a team score of 275, 13 strokes under par and 12 better than the visiting Lions. Although the format of the event allowed Richmond to use its best four individual scores from a pool of six golfers, instead of the usual five, the Spiders 13-under score Friday has been bettered just once in program history: a round of 273 (-15) to open the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla.Â
Reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Lou Baker led Richmond with a 67 (-5), matching the lowest round of his collegiate career and equaling the 11th-lowest round in program history. Baker recorded five straight birdies on holes 13 to 17. Junior Ben Cooper was one shot behind at 68 (-4), while sophomore Garrett Clark birdied his final two holes to finish with a 3-under 69.Â
Two more Spiders finished in red figures, as senior Michael Childress and freshman Cole Ekert each carded 1-under 71s.Â
Richmond won't compete again until spring break, when the Spiders play in a pair of full-field events in North Carolina: the Mid Pines Collegiate on March 7-8 at Mid Pines Golf Club and the Forest Creek Collegiate on March 12-13 at Forest Creek Golf Club.Â
