Spiders Earn Eight Seed, Will Face Davidson in A-10 Championship Second Round

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton clinched the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title and will serve as the No. 1 overall seed entering next week's A-10 Women's Basketball Championship at CHASE Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Del. The 14-team, single-elimination tournament tips off Wednesday, March 2 and will conclude with the championship final on Sunday, March 6.
ESPN+ will stream Wednesday's first-round games through Friday's quarterfinals. CBS Sports Network will air the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. while the championship final will get underway Sunday at 2 p.m. via a national broadcast on ESPN2.
The Flyers finished the 2021-22 campaign with a league-best 23-4 overall mark along with a 14-1 record in league competition, notching a final winning percentage of .933. Now back-to-back-to-back regular-season champs, Dayton receives a double-bye into the quarterfinals and will open championship play Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m.
In addition to Dayton, second-seeded Rhode Island (12-2), No. 3 Massachusetts (11-4) and fourth-overall VCU (9-5) earned double-byes into the quarterfinal round of the championship as well. VCU follows the Flyers with a 1:30 p.m. tipoff on Friday with Rhody opening the second session at 5 p.m. and UMass wrapping up the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m.
Seeds five through 10 registered byes into the second round and will begin play Thursday. La Salle (9-6) captured fifth overall and will take on the winner of No. 12 George Washington (4-11) and No. 13 St. Bonaventure (4-12) at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday in the second round. The Colonials and Bonnies officially launch the championship with their first-round contest Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Sixth-seeded Fordham (8-6) starts its run Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the late first-round clash between No. 11 Saint Louis (5-9) and No. 14 George Mason (3-12). The matchup between the Billikens and Patriots tips off at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and will stream nationally via ESPN+.
Saint Joseph's (7-8) secured the No. 7 seed and will battle 10th-seeded Duquesne (6-10) at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the second round; the winner will face No. 2 Rhode Island in Friday's quarterfinals matchup. Eighth-seeded Richmond (7-9) squares off against No. 9 Davidson (6-10) at 11 a.m. on Thursday for the right to play top-seeded Dayton in the quarterfinals.
Davidson secured the ninth overall slot over Duquesne via a head-to-head tiebreaker, thanks to a 73-67 home victory against the Dukes on Saturday, Jan. 15.
The winner of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which tips off Wednesday March, 16 with the First Four.
