RICHMOND, Va. -- Seniors Naomi Mitchell and Emily Ward paced the Richmond Spiders women's golf team in the first round of the 36-hole Independence Classic Sunday. Playing on what has served as their home course for the last four years, Mitchell shot a 1-under 71 -- best in the 22-person field -- and Ward carded a 1-over 73 to finish the day tied for third.Â
Mitchell's round was the second-lowest of her collegiate career, one shot behind the 2-under 70 she shot in the second round of last year's River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C. Ward's 73 included three birdies, tied for second most in the field behind Sarah Fouratt of Seton Hall.Â
Mitchell and Ward helped Richmond to a team score of 303 (+15), tied with St. John's for the lead with 18 holes remaining and one shot in front of Seton Hall. Rory Weinfurther (77, +5) and Muskan Uppal (82, +10)Â provided Richmond's other two team scores.Â
Playing as an individual, Kendall Miller shot a career-low 75 (+3) and is tied for fifth entering Monday's final round. Vicky Zhu (77, +5) and Christine Mandile (79, +7) also carded rounds in the 70s while competing as individuals.Â
Tee times for Monday's final round will begin at 11:00 AM.Â
