Gilyard's game-winner gives Spiders third straight win
02/07/2022 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Spiders guard Jacob Gilyard drained a step-back three-pointer with 0.9 seconds left to send Richmond to a 62-59 victory over George Mason at the Robins Center Monday night. Gilyard gathered an outlet pass from Tyler Burton with less than 10 seconds remaining, dribbled across halfcourt and off a screen from Matt Grace. When Grace's defender switched onto him, Gilyard isolated at the top of the key before stepping back and releasing a 24-foot jumper as the clock ticked down.
"It's a shot I practice a lot, a shot I feel comfortable with" said Gilyard. "Big-time players make big-time shots and that's what happened."
"My preference is to practice enough and be alert enough to not have to call time-out," said Richmond coach Chris Mooney about the Spiders final possession. "Whatever we would do after a time-out we can do on the fly, in transition as we're coming down the court."
Gilyard's game-winner was his seventh three-pointer of the game, tied for the sixth most in a single contest in Spiders history. He led all players with 23 points, increasing his career total to 1,852 and passing Richmond Athletics Hall-of-Famer Ed Harrison to move into sixth place on Richmond's all-time scoring list.
After finishing the first half on a 3:30 scoring drought and trailing 31-29 to the Patriots at the break, the Spiders opened the second half with a 12-0 run. Tyler Burton tallied eight of his 14 points in the first six minutes of the second half while Grant Golden chipped in the other four to push the Spiders lead to 41-31. Golden finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.
Mason regrouped and used an 18-8 run to take a 49-48 lead by the 8:33 mark. The teams traded the lead twice before Mason quickly built a six-point lead with 5:25 left with a pair of three-pointers.
Gilyard responded with a three to cut the lead in half. Then Andre Gustavson came up with one of his game-high four steals to led to a Golden bucket in the paint to get Rihcmond within one with three minutes left. Mason answered with a jumper to push it back to a three-point Spider deficit at 59-56.
Another three-pointer from Gilyard with 1:24 remaining tied the game at 59. After back-to-back defensive stops, including a block by Matt Grace, Tyler Burton pulled down the defensive rebound and found Gilyard with the game clock in single digits. The Spiders fifth-year starter took it from there, sending the Spiders to their sixth win in their last seven games.
The Spiders head on the road for a rematch vs George Mason Wednesday in Fairfax, Va. The 7 p.m. game will air on CBS Sports Network.
