RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond redshirt senior defender Ray Baran (Berwyn, Pa.) has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Baran led the Spiders to a 14-9 victory over visiting UMBC Sunday.
This marks the first weekly honor of Baran's career and the third Spider to earn Player of the Week honors this season. Redshirt sophomore Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) was named Defensive Player of the Week in week one while graduate Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in week two.
Baran led the Spiders' defense that limited the Retrievers to nine goals, the third time this year they have held an opponent to single digit goals. Baran led the way with a team-high six ground balls while forcing a season-best three turnovers. The Spiders as a team forced UMBC into 21 turnovers in the victory. Baran has played in 44 games in his Spider career, making 43 starts. He has collected 98 ground balls in his career and forced 42 turnovers.
Baran and the Spiders return to action Saturday in their Southern Conference opener. Richmond travels to Hampton for the first time in program history and the only season the Spiders and Pirates will be conference mates. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
