Klimkiewicz Records 1,000th Career Point as Richmond Falls in A-10 Second Round
03/03/2022 | Women's Basketball
WILMINGTON, Del. – Senior Kate Klimkiewicz notched her 1,000th career point Thursday afternoon as the eighth-seeded Spiders fell 66-62 to ninth-seeded Davidson in the Atlantic 10 Championship Second Round. Richmond drops to 16-14 overall this season while Davidson advances to face top-seeded Dayton in the A-10 quarterfinals Friday.
"It's never easy ending a conference tournament without the dream of that championship game and getting to cut down the net. I think everybody gets to this time of year and if you lose a game in the conference tournament, especially early, you think back to a million things you wish would've gone differently," said head coach Aaron Roussell. "I thought we struggled with some things today that we talked about this week and some things that we had cleaned up last week. I thought we were the best we've been at rebounding this last week, but Davidson put some pressure on us. They were aggressive on the boards and we got caught in some switches, and they made us pay on a few of those."
Klimkiewicz opened the scoring for Richmond in the game when she swiped a pass and took it all the way in for a layup at 8:48 for her 1,000th career point, which also sparked a 10-0 run for the Spiders. Emma Squires put the Spiders up by nine at 13-4 with 6:02 to go in the opening frame, and Sydney Boone drilled a pair beyond the arc in the final minute. The Wildcats got a basket back at the last second and Richmond led 26-21 at the end of the first.
Addie Budnik's layup in the opening seconds of the second quarter put Richmond up by seven, but Davidson narrowed the gap to one point at 6:12 in the frame. Grace Townsend answered with two straight buckets including a triple at 4:00 to push Richmond's lead to 33-27. The Spiders led 36-31 with 1:13 remaining in the half, but the Wildcats closed the frame with a pair of buckets in the last minute to even things up at 36-all heading into the break.
Davidson got a quick three in the third to take its first lead since the first minute of the game, and after Richmond retook the lead at 40-39, the Spiders unfortunately would not lead again in the game. The Wildcats pushed their lead to nine points late in the third and Budnik would cut the deficit back down to six with a triple at 1:07 before closing the frame with a layup to make it 55-49 in favor of Davidson heading into the fourth.
After getting down by nine points again early in the fourth, Richmond chipped away at Davidson's lead and cut the deficit down to four points at 2:04 with a pair of free throws from Squires. Budnik put up a huge block on the other end at 1:48 to keep the Wildcats in a scoring drought, and Townsend knocked down a pair of free throws to pull the Spiders within two points at 64-62 with 36 seconds to go. Davidson made a layup with 12 seconds left to go back up by four, and a couple late shots for Richmond would not fall.
