St. Bonaventure pulls aways from Spiders with late run
03/04/2022 | Men's Basketball
OLEAN, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure outscored Richmond 10-0 over a four-minute span late in the second half to turn a one-point deficit into a nine-point lead, sending the Spiders to a 72-65 road loss Friday night.
With 8:33 to play, Jacob Gilyard hit a three-pointer to give Richmond a 56-55 lead. St. Bonaventure scored the game's next 10 points as Richmond missed all four of its shots from the field – all three-pointers – during the Bonnies critical run. The Spiders struggled from three-point range all evening, finishing just 7-27 from deep (26 percent).
"The zone, those double [teams] are going to dictate that you have to make some perimeter shots more consistently than we did," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney of the St. Bonaventure defense.
Following the Bonnies run, a pair of defensive stops gave Richmond a chance to get back into the game. But the Spiders couldn't capitalize, going 1-2 on consecutive trips to the foul line and missing another three-pointer, one of eight straight Richmond would miss before Nick Sherod hit from three-point range as time expired.
While the Bonnies made just four three-pointers in the game, they shot 55 percent from the field (30-55), including 15-25 (60 percent) after halftime.
"They had seven assists on 30 field goals which means they're kind of playing a little bit of one-on-one … and we didn't guard that part of it well enough," said Mooney.
Tyler Burton, who scored a career-high 36 points in a win vs St. Bonaventure on February 4, led Richmond with 21 points and eight rebounds, his 12th career 20-point game.
Nathan Cayo and Grant Golden also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points each. Cayo added seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Richmond was already guaranteed to be the sixth seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship entering the game. The Spiders will open their tournament on Thursday at 8:30 PM on USA Network against the winner of Wednesday's game between the 11-seed and 14-seed.
