RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond's Tyler Burton and Jacob Gilyard were both named Second Team All-State by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced Wednesday. Gilyard was also named the Virginia State Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season.Â
Gilyard, the all-time NCAA Division I steals leader, ranked first in D-I in minutes per game this season (38:36), second in steals per game (2.92), and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.41) while averaging 13.3 points and a team-high 5.4 assists per contest. He was named Most Outstanding Player at the Atlantic 10 Championship after leading Richmond to its second A-10 title. In addition to being named the Virginia State Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, Gilyard was also a Second Team All-State selection in 2020. He is the first Spider to be named All-State in multiple seasons since T.J. Cline (2016-17).Â
Burton was Richmond's leading scorer and rebounder this season, averaging 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He totaled 594 points, the most of any player in the Atlantic 10 and the 14th most in a season in program history. Burton and George Mason's Josh Oduro were the only two players to rank in the top seven in the A-10 in both scoring and rebounding.Â
Richmond and Virginia Tech were the only schools to place multiple players on the All-State teams. 2022 is the first year the Spiders have had multiple All-State players since 2011, when both Kevin Anderson and Justin Harper were selected.Â
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.Â
