ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Richmond Spiders women's golf team combined for a team score of 302 (+14) in Saturday's 2nd round of the Patriot League Championship, jumping from third to first on the leaderboard with 18 holes remaining. UR will enter Sunday's final round at 37-over par, one shot in front of Boston University.
"The message will not change," said Richmond coach Calle Barlow when asked if holding the 36-hole lead will alter UR's approach in the final round. "Today, I said 'Guys – all I want you to do is stay below the hole.' It'll be the same tomorrow: really pay attention to the wind and really pay attention to those pin placements and where you want to leave your shots on those greens."
Richmond combined to record nine birdies Saturday: four on the first six holes, one on the middle six holes, and four on the final six holes.
"Watching us at the beginning I was like 'wow, this is going to be a really good day.' But the wind kind of picked up and it got a little tricky but we actually stayed in it and finished pretty strong," said Barlow. "We've just got to figure out those middle holes that kind of gave us a little headache today."
Sophomore Rory Weinfurther, the defending individual Patriot League Champion, led Richmond with a 74 (+2) Saturday and will enter the final round at 151 (+7), just one shot behind 36-hole leader Flair Kuan of Boston. Weinfurther has recorded 24 pars in the first two rounds, second most in the field.
UR's two freshmen, Lauren Jones and Christine Mandile, both shot 75 (+3) Saturday and shooting 83 and 85, respectively, in Round 1 Friday. It was Mandile's lowest round this season and Jones' lowest round this spring.
"It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it," said Barlow. "Both looked super confident. It was really nice to see them play like that and it will help them have a little more confidence going into tomorrow."
Junior Vicky Zhu provided the final team score for Richmond Saturday, a 6-over 78. Zhu birdied the difficult par-3 17th in swirling winds and made a 12-foot par putt on the 18th hole. Zhu, who will enter Sunday's round in fifth place at 152 (+8), has played the par 3s at Naval Academy Golf Course in even par this week, the best score in the field.
Senior Naomi Mitchell shot 81 (+9) Saturday and is tied for 15th place at 159 (+15). Emily Ward shot 80 (+8) Saturday and is in 24th place at 162 (+18).
Richmond will be seeking its fourth conference championship Sunday. The Spiders won the Patriot League title in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
