RICHMOND, Va. --Â Â Rising senior Tyler Burton will enter the 2022Â NBA Draft while reserving his right to withdraw and preserve his final year of college eligibility, he announced Wednesday.Â
In a message posted to social media, Burton said: "These past three years have showed me things that as a kid I could only dream about. I would like to personally thank my teammates, coaches, and the fans of Richmond. After close talks with coaches, friends, and family, I am grateful to announce that I will be declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft. I will be keeping my NCAA eligibility throughout the this process and I look forward to the opportunities ahead."
By declaring for the NBA Draft, Burton can work out and be evaluated by NBA teams, receiving feedback and advice on how to maximize his chance of reaching the NBA. By maintaining his eligibility, he can return to Richmond if he decides to withdraw from the draft by June 1, the deadline for players to withdraw and still keep their college eligibility.Â
"Our entire program is fully behind Tyler's decision," said Richmond coach Chris Mooney. "He is going to be a tremendous professional player and we are committed to doing everything possible to help him throughout this process."Â
Burton led Richmond to the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship last month and helped the Spiders upset Big Ten-champion Iowa in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Burton led UR in scoring (16.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.7 rebounds per game) during the season while earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors and First Team NABC All-District honors.Â
Burton appeared in all 37 games for Richmond this season, amassing 594 points, 14th most in a season in program history, and 285 rebounds, seventh most in a season in program history. He led the Atlantic 10 in free throws and ranked second in double-doubles. George Mason's Josh Oduro was the only other player to rank in the top seven in the conference in both scoring and rebounding.Â
