Football Adds Transfer Defensive Lineman Matei Fitz

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond football coach Russ Huesman announced the addition of transfer defensive lineman Matei Fitz (Leesburg, Va./James Madison) to the program. Fitz joins the Spiders with four years of eligibility after redshirting last fall at former Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison.
Fitz (6-2, 280) was a standout at Tuscarora High School prior to his year at JMU. He was named First Team All-State in Virginia by MaxPreps and was a VHSL 4A First Team All-State selection as a junior. He was named the 2019 Region 4C Defensive Player of the Year his junior season, also picking up All-Region honors. He set the Tuscarora single-season record with 14.0 sacks and 28.0 tackles for a loss as a junior.
Fitz continued to rake in the honors as a junior, being named the Dulles District Defensive Player of the Year and earning First Team All-District honors. He was named the Loudoun County Defensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-County accolades.
Fitz is the all-time leader in Tuscarora football history in tackles for loss at 53.0 and sacks at 30.0. He ranks second all-time in program history with 210 tackles. He guided the Huskies to a pair of state championship games, winning the Region 4C title in 2019 and the Region 5C in 2017.
Fitz is the Spiders' fifth incoming transfer this season, joining the likes of quarterback Reece Udinski, wide receiver Jakob Herres, wide receiver Nick DeGennaro and offensive lineman Derek Ferraro. The Spiders open the 2022 season September 3 when they travel to Virginia.
