RICHMOND, Va. -- Rising senior Tyler Burton announced that he is withdrawing from the 2022 NBA Draft and returning to Richmond for the 2022-23 season Wednesday evening. Burton, who led Richmond in both scoring and rebounding last season, made the announcement on social media two hours before the deadline for early entrants to the Draft to withdraw and maintain their college eligibility. Since declaring for the Draft on April 6, Burton has held workouts with many NBA teams and participated in the NBA G League Elite Camp in Chicago on May 16-17.Â
Burton will return to Richmond after leading the Spiders to an Atlantic 10 championship and upset win over Big Ten champion Iowa in the NCAA Tournament last season. Burton scored 18 points, second among Spiders, and collected a game-high 11 rebounds against the Hawkeyes in Buffalo, N.Y. on March 17. He also registered his 1,000th career point in the win, becoming the 51st Spider to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
Burton earned multiple All-Conference honors after averaging 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last season. He was named First Team All-Conference in NABC District IV (Atlantic 10) and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 in voting by A-10 coaches. He was also a Second Team All-State selection by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Burton ranked among the league leaders in scoring (7th), rebounding (6th), double-doubles (2nd with 11), and free throws (1st with 163) last season.Â
Burton joins graduate student Andre Gustavson as starters returning from last season's A-10 Championship team. The Spiders won four games in four days, including wins over 3-seed VCU, 2-seed Dayton, and 1-seed Davidson, to claim the second A-10 title in program history and first since 2011 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. from March 10-13.Â
Burton, a native of Uxbridge, Mass., has appeared in 90 of a possible 91 games with 61 starts for the Spiders since arriving on campus in 2019. He won the 2021 Chris Daniels Award as the Most Improved Player in the Atlantic 10 after averaging 12 points and 7.6 rebounds in his first season as a starter. Burton's 1,007 career points rank 50th in program history.Â
Jacob Gilyard, the 2022 Atlantic 10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and Grant Golden, a 2022 A-10 All-Tournament Team selection, are eligible for the NBA Draft, which will be held on June 23 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Nathan Cayo, who also finished his Richmond career last season, has already started his pro career with the Montreal Alliance in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.Â
