Gilyard, Golden to play in NBA Summer League
06/24/2022 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Former Spiders Jacob Gilyard and Grant Golden have agreed to deals to compete in the 2022 NBA Summer League, which will take place from July 7-17 in Las Vegas. Gilyard will play for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, while Golden will be a member of the Atlanta Hawks.
Golden, the second-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder in Richmond history, will play a four-game Summer League schedule with the Hawks. Atlanta opens Summer League play against the Utah Jazz on July 9 at 7:30 PM before taking on the New Orleans Pelicans on July 11 at 6:00 PM and the Miami Heat on July 12 at 7:00 PM, with all games airing on NBA TV. The Hawks final Summer League game is July 14 at 3:00 PM against the San Antonio Spurs and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Gilyard, Richmond's career leader in assists, steals, and three-pointers, will play with the Warriors in the Summer League as well as the California Classic, a two-day event at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Gilyard and the Warriors will face the Miami heat at 5:00 PM on July 2 (NBA TV) and the Los Angeles Lakers at 7:30 PM on July 3 (NBA TV) before heading to Las Vegas for the Summer League.
In Vegas, the Warriors open against the New York Knicks on July 8 at 8:00 PM on ESPN2 before taking on the San Antonio Spurs on July 10 (7:30 PM, NBA TV) and the Boston Celtics on July 12 (8:00 PM, ESPN2). Golden State's Summer League finale is scheduled for July 15 at 7:00 PM against the Oklahoma City Thunder on ESPN.
Gilyard and Golden combined to lead the Spiders to the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship, with both players earning spots on the A-10's All-Tournament Team (and Gilyard being named Most Outstanding Player). Over their final three seasons at Richmond, the Spiders went 62-29, collecting more wins than any other A-10 team outside of Dayton (67) over that span.
With Gilyard and Golden signing pro contracts, they become the 25th and 26th former Spiders to play professional basketball during Chris Mooney's tenure at Richmond, which started in 2005.
