WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Spiders freshman Hannah Lydic registered seven birdies and 11 pars to shoot a 7-under par 65 in her first collegiate round Monday morning at the William & Mary Fall Invitational, the lowest 18-hole score in program history. Lydic's 65 was two shots better than the 67 (-5) Annie Collom shot in a match vs Columbia in 2018.Â
"I've been wanting to play competitive rounds for forever," said Lydic. "I was like a race horse trying to get out of the gate and I was ready to go."
Lydic started Round 1 on the fifth hole and recorded the first birdie of her college career shortly thereafter, carding a three on the par-4 6th hole. She followed with birdies on the par-5 9th hole and par-3 13th hole before registering three straight birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18. A final birdie on the par-3 2nd hole moved her to 7-under.
"I hit every green, which really helped because I could just two-putt or one-putt [from there]," said Lydic of her play in Round 1. "My driving was really good too. When I play golf I see a lot of lines. I'll see the target line and I'll see the line that I go back on and if they're aligned then it's lights out."
Lydic (-7), junior Rory Weinfurther (-1), sophomore Lauren Jones (+3), and senior Vicky Zhu (+4) combined for a team score of 287 (-1) in Round 1, tying the program record for lowest 18-hole team score. The Spiders also shot a 1-under 287 in the second round of their 2018 match vs Columbia.
Lydic followed her record-breaking Monday morning with a 1-under 71 in Round 2 on Monday afternoon. At 8-under par (136) through 36 holes, she'll take a four-shot lead into Tuesday's final round. As a team, Richmond is first in the 10-team field at 10-over par (586), two shots in front of Elon and three shots in front of Charleston Southern.Â
Weinfurther also enters Round 3 in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. She's tied for seventh at 2-over par (146). Jones is tied for 19th at 7-over (151), two shots in front of Zhu, who is tied for 24th. Sophomore Christine Mandile is in 50th place at 162 (+18), while freshman Olivia Wilkie, competing as an individual, is tied for 27th at +10 (154).Â
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 AM. Richmond will tee off on holes 1-4.Â
"We're all going to get a good night's sleep tonight and get super replenished for tomorrow," said Lydic of the team's plan for Tuesday. "We'll see how low we can go tomorrow because the ultimate goal is to win and we can't just win with two rounds, you've got to win with three."
