Carlin leads Spiders into third place at MacDonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- In his collegiate debut, Spiders freshman Drew Carlin played with the poise of a veteran Saturday at Yale's MacDonald Cup, shooting a pair of 1-under 69s to lead Richmond. Carlin registered seven birdies and five bogeys over 36 holes and is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard at 138 (-2).
"I was just trying to stay patient and keep the ball in front of me," said Carlin of his approach to his first collegiate competition. "Coach [Adam Decker's] plan was to control the speed on the greens, play towards the center of the greens, and stay patient."
Richmond's gameplan has the Spiders in third place in the 11-team field at 710 (+10), nine shots back of tournament leader Minnesota from the Big Ten.Â
Senior Ben Cooper is also in the top 10; he's tied for 10th at 140 (E) after rounds of 67 and 73 Saturday. Senior Lou Baker is one shot behind at 141 (+1), tied for 12th. Baker's 28 pars Saturday were tied for the most by any player.Â
Sophomore Cole Ekert is tied for 23rd at 143 (+3), grad student Michael Childress is tied for 40th at 148 (+8), and junior Garrett Clark is tied for 44th at 149 (+9) for the Spiders, who are required to count the best five of their six individual scores towards their team score in each round at the MacDonald Cup. Â
UR mastered the par 4s at the Yale Golf Course Saturday, combining for a score of 4-over on those holes, six shots better than any other team in the field. But the par-5 18th hole gave the Spiders trouble in both rounds, with UR playing the hole in a combined 12-over par. Should the Spiders solve the 621-yard finishing hole, they could be in line for their first tournament title since the VCU Shootout in September 2021.Â
Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:50 AM.
