Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond football team jumped spots in both national polls, moving from No. 24 to No. 22 in the AFCA Coaches' Poll and from No. 22 to No. 17 in the FCS Stats Perform Poll. The Spiders opened the year ranked 24th in the nation in the preseason polls and this week marks their second in-season ranking of the year after a 3-1 (1-0) start to the season.
Richmond's 51-7 win over Stony Brook on Saturday came as its seventh-straight win over an FCS opponent dating back to week eight of last year when the team put together a string of four victories to close the season. The Spiders have wins over Saint Francis (31-21), Lehigh (30-6) and Stony Brook (51-7) so far this season.
Graduate quarterback Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) was named the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Player of the Week as well as CAA Offensive player of the Week after going 35-42 (83.3%) with five touchdown passes in less than three quarters of action during Saturday's home win. Udinski leads the nation in completion percentage (90-117, 76.9%) headed into Saturday's matchup against fellow nationally-ranked CAA opponent No. 23 Elon.
Redshirt sophomore Jasiah Williams (Petersburg, Va.) leads the CAA in receptions with 34. He's grabbed an average 8.50 receptions per game, recording 282 yards along the way. Williams picked up his first career 100-yard game on Saturday, finishing with 10 receptions for 112 yards.
Alongside Williams, Leroy Henley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) has 24 receptions for 250 yards on the season with three touchdowns—the most by a Spider receiver. Henley broke 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career on the road at Lehigh when he hauled in nine passes for 127 yards. Henley's six reception per game ranks second in the CAA, only trailing Williams.
On the defensive front, Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) leads the team 43 tackles while Marlem Louis (Venice, Fla.) leads with four sacks for a total loss of 21 yards. Aaron Banks (Stephen's City, Va.) (3), Tyrek Funderburk (Indian Trail, N.C.) (2) and Bryson Parker (Charlotte, N.C.) (1) have all picked off opposing teams' quarterbacks this season, with Banks and Funderburk each returning one for a touchdown. Wheeler's 23 tackles and 10.75/game is second in the CAA as he heads to Elon one shy of 300 for his career.
The Spiders look to go 2-0 in CAA play and continue its streak against FCS opponents when it takes on No. 23 Elon Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium.
