"One of many things that attracted Steve and I to the University of Richmond many years ago was the focus on academic success for the student-athletes. Our teams work very hard both in the classroom and on our field of competition. We are very happy for our teams and proud of their accomplishments in the classroom," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Lori Taylor. "Every year we set this academic honor and winning the Atlantic 10 Championship as goals for our program. For 21-consecutive years both our men and women have achieved this academic award, exemplifying the importance our teams place on their education- the primary reason they are here at the University of Richmond."
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the program must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
The Richmond women recorded a 3.40 cumulative grade point average to join eight other A-10 programs on this year's list.
The Spider men maintained a 3.34 cumulative GPA to complete what has become over two decades of academic distinction for both the men's and women's programs.Â
"It's also important to recognize that our student-athletes are not only earning their education, but they are doing so at a remarkably high level in the classroom and on the field of competition," said head men's coach Steve Taylor "They exert tremendous passion for success. Our men and women are not simply doing the minimum, instead they have chosen to excel in every area and have learned the balance between all aspects of their college experience including academia and community service works."
