10/22/2023 | Field Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Richmond Field Hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime to Yale in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field.
Richmond, now 7-9 on the season, closes out the 2023 regular season at Crenshaw Field Friday, hosting VCU in Atlantic 10 Conference action at 3 PM. UR then hosts William & Mary Sunday at noon.
UR edged Yale with a 4-to-3 shot advantage while both squads had a single shot on goal and two penalty corners in a scoreless first quarter.
Just 22 seconds into the second quarter, Stevie Drum put the Spiders on the board. As the Spiders were pressing and pushing Yale closer to the goal, Drum intercepted a pass, did a quick juke of her defender and beat the goalkeeper for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Under a minute later, the Spiders converted a penalty corner play when Madi Hyatt tipped in Alexandria Lavelle's shot into the circle.
The Spiders held the 2-0 lead until the final five minutes of action when Yale converted a penalty corner shot in the 55th minute to cut UR's lead to 2-1. The Bulldogs converted another quarter with less than a minute left in regulation to force overtime.
Yale tallied a third goal via penalty corner play 50 seconds into the overtime to secure the victory.
Richmond finished with four of their 10 shots on goal and six penalty corners. Yale tallied nine of their 19 shots on frame and 10 corners. Kristen Rake made six saves, including three in the third quarter.
